Help with making a shield into a staff

Hey folks, I'm trying to turn a shield into an off-hand staff, like Gandalf.  ;D I'm already messing around with a base shield .dat to attach a staff model to in VRS, and combined the models together. What I can't figure out is how to attach the staff to a specific node on the skeleton so that the staff sits in the left hand instead of the back, like it usually does.

Any assistance or advice on this subject is appreciated, the guides on VRS and the like on grumpyrarab don't contain their images anymore so they're difficult to follow.

EDIT: I've finally attached the staff to the shield node. So now I have a staff floating above my character's arm. Now that's done, I've exported to .mqo with modelviewer. The trouble I'm having now is moving the model in metasequoia. Even with axes X Y Z locked, when I use modelviewer to reimport the .mqo there is some stretching of the staff's texture.
